“To read without reflecting is like eating without digesting.” –Edmund Burke

Synopsis

It is generally acknowledged that attachment relationships are important for infants and young children, but there is little clarity on what exactly constitutes such a relationship. Does it occur between two individuals (infant--mother or infant--father) or in an extended network? In the West, monotropic attachment appears to function as a secure foundation for infants, but is this true in other cultures? This volume offers perspectives from a range of disciplines on these questions. Contributors from psychology, biology, anthropology, evolution, social policy, neuroscience, information systems, and practice describe the latest research on the cultural and evolutionary foundations on children's attachment relationships as well as the implications for education, counseling, and policy. The contributors discuss such issues as the possible functions of attachment, including trust and biopsychological regulation; the evolutionary foundations, if any, of attachment; ways to model attachment using the tools of information science; the neural foundations of attachment; and the influence of cultural attitudes on attachment. Taking an integrative approach, the book embraces the wide cultural variations in attachment relationships in humans and their diversity across nonhuman primates. It proposes research methods for the culturally sensitive study of attachment networks that will lead to culturally sensitive assessments, practices, and social policies. “I often carry things to read so that I will not have to look at people.” –Charles Bukowski

Synopsis

Before the midpoint of the twentieth century, culture as a subject was routinely relegated to the background of any period's study. From the 1950s on, however, it moved very clearly to the foreground. Suddenly culture was everywhere: no longer the property of an elite, the masses had a culture and culture had a mass. Accordingly, the study of culture and the critique of culture became an increasingly central part of political and intellectual lifethe cultural turn, as it came to be known in the humanities and social sciences. This book is a product of and a reflection on that cultural turn, which Michael Denning argues was a fundamental aspect of the age of three worlds, that short half-century (1945-1989) when it was imagined that the world was divided into threethe capitalist first world, the communist second world, and the decolonizing third world. Recasting the legacies of British cultural studies and the radical traditions of the American studies movement in a global context, Denning analyses the political and intellectual battles over the meanings of culture, addresses the rise of a distinctive |American ideology| based on this short |American century|, and charts the lineaments of the global cultures that emerged as three worlds gave way to one.

“I cannot remember the books I’ve read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Synopsis

In May 2013, Glenn Greenwald set out for Hong Kong to meet an anonymous source who claimed to have astonishing evidence of pervasive government spying and insisted on communicating only through heavily encrypted channels. That source turned out to be the 29-year-old NSA contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden, and his revelations about the agency's widespread, systemic overreach proved to be some of the most explosive and consequential news in recent history, triggering a fierce debate over national security and information privacy. As the arguments rage on and the government considers various proposals for reform, it is clear that we have yet to see the full impact of Snowden's disclosures. Now for the first time, Greenwald fits all the pieces together, recounting his high-intensity ten-day trip to Hong Kong, examining the broader implications of the surveillance detailed in his reporting for The Guardian, and revealing fresh information on the NSA's unprecedented abuse of power with never-before-seen documents entrusted to him by Snowden himself. Going beyond NSA specifics, Greenwald also takes on the establishment media, excoriating their habitual avoidance of adversarial reporting on the government and their failure to serve the interests of the people. Finally, he asks what it means both for individuals and for a nation's political health when a government pries so invasively into the private lives of its citizens—and considers what safeguards and forms of oversight are necessary to protect democracy in the digital age. Coming at a landmark moment in American history, No Place to Hide is a fearless, incisive, and essential contribution to our understanding of the U.S. surveillance state.

“Never judge a book by its movie.” –J.W. Eagan

Synopsis

The polygon-mesh approach to 3D modeling was a huge advance, but today its limitations are clear. Longer render times for increasingly complex images effectively cap image complexity, or else stretch budgets and schedules to the breaking point. Comprised of contributions from leaders in the development and application of this technology, Point-Based Graphics examines it from all angles, beginning with the way in which the latest photographic and scanning devices have enabled modeling based on true geometry, rather than appearance. From there, it’s on to the methods themselves. Even though point-based graphics is in its infancy, practitioners have already established many effective, economical techniques for achieving all the major effects associated with traditional 3D Modeling and rendering. You’ll learn to apply these techniques, and you’ll also learn how to create your own. The final chapter demonstrates how to do this using Pointshop3D, an open-source tool for developing new point-based algorithms. The first book on a major development in computer graphics by the pioneers in the field Shows how 3D images can be manipulated as easily as 2D images are with Photoshop

Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.

Synopsis

Graphics for Architecture Kevin Forseth with David Vaughan A thorough understanding of design drawing enhances the designer′s ability to reason out difficult graphic constructions and to select or create appropriate means for depicting buildings and environments. This fully illustrated guide presents the most effective methods for mechanically constructing architectural plans, elevations, sections, paralines, perspectives, and shadows. All methods are described in basic principles of perspective geometry. Throughout the volume many pictorial drawings illuminate the connection between step–by–step procedures for constructing design drawings and the abstract concepts underlying orthographic, oblique, and perspective projections. For formulating graphics work–book problems around paraline construction the guide includes a notation system for describing an unlimited range of paraline–oblique drawings. A shortcut method for casting shadows in plan and elevation is useful for modeling shadows in architectural site plans and for obtaining fast design results. In addition there are eight different step–by–step procedures for setting up and constructing one and two–point perspective. Common–method perspectives are presented in the context of a drafting–board surface, and perspectives without plan are discussed as interiors, exteriors, and sections. Combining carefully organized learning sequences with the quick reference qualities of a handbook, this volume is an excellent reference source for the architectural office or studio as well as an easy–to–follow manual for students.

“If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson

Synopsis

Raymond Williams is a towering presence in cultural studies, most importantly as the founder of the apporach that has come to be known as cultural materialism. Yet Williams s method was always open-ended and fluid, and this volume collects together his most significant work from over a twenty-year peiod in which he wrestled with the concepts of materialism and culture and their interrelationship. Aside from his more directly theoretical texts, however, case-studies of theatrical naturalism, the Bloomsbury group, advertising, science fiction, and the Welsh novel are also included as illustrations of the method at work. Finally, Williams s identity as an active socialist, rather than simply an academic, is captured by two unambiguously political pieces on the past, present and future of Marxism.

“If you love books enough, books will love you back.” –Jo Walton

Synopsis

In five essays, including three on historiography, one of the greatest minds in English political thought in the twentieth century explores themes central to the human experience: the nature of history, the rule of law, and the quest for power that is intrinsic to the human condition. Michael Oakeshott believed, as Timothy Fuller observes, that “the historian’s effort to understand the past without ulterior motive [is the] effort which distinguishes the historian as historian from all who examine the past for the guidance they expect it to provide about practical concerns.” The essays on history are “Present, Future, and Past,” “Historical Events: The fortuitous, the causal, the similar, the correlative, the analogous, and the contingent,” and “Historical Change: Identity and continuity.” In “The Rule of Law,” Oakeshott takes the expression to mean a particular kind of ideal human relationship. In “The Tower of Babel”— one of two essays he wrote by the same title and on the same subject—Oakeshott discusses the various versions in which the Bible story has been told and the different circumstances which it has been used to illuminate. On History was originally published in 1983. Michael Oakeshott (1901–1990) was Professor of Political Science at the London School of Economics and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He was the author of many works, including Rationalism in Politics and Other Essays and Hobbes on Civil Association, both published by Liberty Fund. Timothy Fuller is Dean of Colorado College and has published widely on the works of Michael Oakeshott.

“A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it.” –Edward Morgan

Synopsis

Before there were antiquaries who studied classical antiquity through recovered artifacts, Chinese scholars envisioned the distant past through transmitted illustrations and the classical texts. Among the most important illustrated commentaries was a book called Sanli Tu, or Illustrations to the Ritual Classics, whose origins are said to go back to the great commentator Zheng Xuan. The book survives in the version produced in the late 950s by Nie Chongyi, a classics professor at the court of the Later Zhou (951 960) and Northern Song (960 1127) dynasties. It is now mostly remembered (if at all) for its controversial entries and thus as a quaint predecessor of more empirical antiquarian scholarship done since the mid-eleventh century. But despite such criticism, the book never lost its scholarly authority entirely. In fact, for the first hundred years of the Song era it was outright normative, playing a crucial role in the dynasty s perception of ancient ritual and the construction of its own Confucian state cult. Design by the Book discusses the history and significance of the Sanli Tu, and gives a chronological account of its creation and reception. |

“What you don’t know would make a great book.” –Sydney Smith

Synopsis

Today truly useful and interactive graphics are available on affordable computers. While hardware progress has been impressive, widespread gains in software expertise have come more slowly. Information about advanced techniques—beyond those learned in introductory computer graphics texts—is not as easy to come by as inexpensive hardware. This book brings the graphics programmer beyond the basics and introduces them to advanced knowledge that is hard to obtain outside of an intensive CG work environment. The book is about graphics techniques—those that don’t require esoteric hardware or custom graphics libraries—that are written in a comprehensive style and do useful things. It covers graphics that are not covered well in your old graphics textbook. But it also goes further, teaching you how to apply those techniques in real world applications, filling real world needs. Emphasizes the algorithmic side of computer graphics, with a practical application focus, and provides usable techniques for real world problems. Serves as an introduction to the techniques that are hard to obtain outside of an intensive computer graphics work environment. Sophisticated and novel programming techniques are implemented in C using the OpenGL library, including coverage of color and lighting; texture mapping; blending and compositing; antialiasing; image processing; special effects; natural phenomena; artistic and non-photorealistic techniques, and many others.
